"What's scandalous is that they are having this session when there are two million people starving because of the natural disaster in [Burma], yet there is no special session on that," noted Hillel Neuer, executive director of UN Watch, which monitors the Council at its Geneva base.

Asked yesterday why the Council had not scheduled a session on the Burma junta's resistance to admitting humanitarian aid, a spokesman for the UN human rights high commissioner said the body already had "a very full program."

Bangkok - The United Nations will send nearly a quarter of a million condoms into cyclone-hit Myanmar to help needy survivors with no access to contraceptives, a UN official says.

So far, the UN Population Fund (UNFPA) said it had sent 72 800 condoms to survivors struggling to maintain their family planning after the storm hit in early May.

A total of 218 400 condoms would be delivered, UNFPA aid advisor Chaiyos Kunanusont said.

"We don't want regular use of contraception disrupted. An emergency usually damages the health system, so people don't have access to condoms and contraceptives," said Chaiyos.

Doudou Diene, a United Nations bureaucrat, will tour eight American cities to investigate allegations of institutionalized racism—and his report may be compromised from the start. “It is hard to take the U.N. seriously when its peacekeepers are actively engaged in raping refugees in the Congo and even arming rebel groups, or when it turns a blind eye to the man-made starvation of millions in southern Africa,” Gardiner writes on National Review Online.

“In the arena of human rights, the United Nations has become an emperor with no clothes,” he concludes, “a morally bankrupt institution that wallows in its double standards and appeasement of evil. Doudou Diene’s investigation of the United States should be seen for what it is: a desperate piece of political theater that underscores the U.N.’s growing irrelevance.”
