the café
Grab a coffee and have a chat before you wander through the rest of the forums.
My son had his rugby wrap-up and awards yesterday, and he got the trophy for best forward!
Yeah, I admit my first thought was that everyone got something, but there were only 3 awards per team... so how cool is that?
I'm proud of my boy.

Re: the café
hey hey hey...
I'm proud of your boy too..
Playing forward is one of the most challenging positions I think.. right up there with being goalie...
My gurl played field hockey. They wear those kewl skirts and whack that piece of rock around..
Well.. it's not really a rock. It's more like a round orange piece of cement..
And they hit it with a piece of hardwood with a comma on the end of the stick...
Whack...
I can feel the vibration all the way over to where I was standing..
My kid played goalie.
I was a wreck every game.
But.. playing team sports is huge for a kid. I still think about my softball days..
They always gave the girls team the short woosy bats...
So... I'd always filch one of the boys team bats..
I slammed a couple of home runs with those...
The sissy bats.. lucky if I hit third base..
Anyway proud momma...
you a good momma..

Re: the café
Thanks, Cal. :) I just asked him about the other awards.... Coach's Choice and MVP... so it's pretty special.
I played softball for years, and I still play Slo-Pitch. I wasn't much of a power hitter... my specialty was bunting, and as a lefty I could lay it up the 1st base line and sometimes even run it out. I've hit a couple of triples in more recent years though - one benefit of being a left-handed batter.
One woman ump we have used to play on the women's national team. Her advice was to use a lighter bat. She says most women should use a 26 or a 27oz bat, and I found it made a big difference for me... and I used to use a 28oz bat. The bat speed is a little quicker.
The kids had their Provincial Gymnaestrada today in Vancouver. Their were groups from the Island, Sunshine Coast, various places around here as well as a group from Red Deer. Watching each group perform at the end of the day I realized something.... our group isn't very multi-cultural. Only the Albertans were whiter.
It was a great day though. It's nice as a parent to see what the kids have been working hard on all year... and I'm happy to say their routine was awesome... even better than last year.

lol...
Reminds me of what Coolworx said when he first came to the Okanagan...
"Boy,.. are you guys every white...."
I says.. "it's March. Of course we're white.. "
She says most women should use a 26 or a 27oz bat
Yeah.
I guess that's why we had all those short light bats...
I felt like I was in the little leagues compared to the bats the boys used.
Now that I think of it... it was harder to swing it..
but.. look out when I connected..
56 oz and a whole lot of estrogen behind it..
Of course... I kinda had to hide the bat when the guys would come looking for it...
So you still play eh...
good deal. Keeps ya limber and sharp..
They have teams and tournaments here big time. I usually go at the end and help them celebrate...

Re: the café
Good plan. :)
My brother and sis-in-law live in Armstrong, and there's some big tournament around there someplace... maybe in Armstrong, but I think some is in Vernon maybe too. I don't remember. It sounds too big for my liking... and I'm too old for tournaments now anyway. I don't even like out opening and closing ones for my league. :)
56oz? Wow. I didn't think they made 'em that big. Even our "big boys" use no bigger than a 35 oz'er.
I might be able to connect with the 2nd pitch if I started swinging when the pitcher was winding up for #1.

Re: the café
As golf clubs and bats do the same thing ... impart energy to a ball... I will explain again why a lighter club/bat hits it further.
E=MV2
Energy = weight times velocity squared.
As V is squared a small increase in swing speed will impart more Energy to the ball than a small increase in Mass would.
Congrats on the son's award lily.
56Oz was a booze number Cal used in her home brewing days!

Re: the café
Traffic was unbelievable today. What is normally a half hour drive for me took close to 2 hours.
Now I'm tired, hungry and grumpy.

Re: the café
gar...
2 hours...
that sucks.
And a waste of gas besides...
I had moments of stress today as well...
I spent my first serious moments in the cafe.. trying to mentally download a constant stream of information from the out going owners...
Gott en himmel... there is a lot to put together for even just a small coffee shop.
I tell ya... I'll be happier in a couple of months when we have the coffee business fully by the tail.. (hopefully)..
Right now I just feel like I'm hemorrhaging money...
But.. I knew it was going to be this way... so.. it's all about slogging till the going gets easier.
It's the same for any new job.. so...
I'm just sooooo sooooo glad that I have 4 other people that are totally gung ho about making it a happening...
I just have to remember to stay uber calm and patient...
both things I'm not really known for...
Yah...
It's so nice to have a cafe thread where I can now come and unload ...
tanks Lily...
And I hope your now in a happy well fed mood..

Re: the café
That I am. I had some M&M bacon wrapped steaks and some potatoe wedges as well as a salad, so dinner was quick, even if we did eat at 8:30.
You're cafe... is it like Starbucks where you serve coffee and pastries or is it one of the other kind where you serve soup and stuff too?

Re: the café
Sounds like a splendid dinner...
The cafe serves one type of quiche, turkey sandwich or wrap, a breakfast sandwich, and a house salad. They have muffins, bagels, cookies, and a few other goodies.
We're gonna run with the menu they have.. and probably carry one soup or chili as well. At the moment... the owner gets all his stuff premade except for the salad and he puts the sandwiches together. But he even buys sliced meat for convenience... but I think we'll be slicing our own.

Re: the café
Sounds really good. We have a cafe like that in Tsawwassen - Petra's - and it's always got a lunch crowd, as well as moms who just dropped the kids off at school.
I heard that Starbucks is going to be dropping a lot of their food items and go back to just pastries, which I think is a good idea... although I like a place that serves a good homemade soup.

hehehe...
that'll be us..
I wouldn't want to go out of lunch foods cause it's going to be feeding us as well.. so..
My parents had a cafe all the years we were growing up...
We ate a lot of day old stuff...
